why lessons with bruce?
With over 30 years of teaching both pipe bands and solo pipers, I have travelled throughout North America and Europe as a teacher, competitor, adjudicator, summer school instructor, and workshop leader. While I can happily point to students of mine who have won top professional and amateur prizes at the World's most prestigious piping events, I'm also really excited about the Grade 4 adult students who achieve personal satisfaction and competitive success at their local games!
I'm really interested in helping people get the most out of their piping experience, regardless of age or ability.
I have a Graduate Certificate from the Institute of Piping, and am a member of the Board of Examiners. I am available for Institute of Piping training and certification.
In-Person and Skype Lessons
Bruce has been teaching remotely since 2005, and has built up a world-wide student body of learners of all ages. Whether you are a new piper struggling to get your doublings learned, or a professional piper looking for insights into the fine details of a performance, Bruce is able to offer what you need to lift your playing to the next level.
All you need is a good internet connection. The preferred choice of software at Bruce Gandy Music is Skype. Skype is very easy to install and is compatible with both PC and Mac systems. For a better audio transmission, a good external microphone will bring up a clearer transmission of the chanter. My preferred microphone is the Sony ECM MS907.
Realizing that there is a need for dedicated pipers to get help, I launched Bruce Gandy Music in 2005 and this teaching service allows the potential students the ability to learn right from their own home. The savings are wonderful for the student and you save on gas, wear and tear on your car, and most importantly, your own personal travel time. This relieves a lot of stress for the student as they are working from the comfort of their own home, and my own experiences have taught me that this leads to better focus and concentration during the lesson. Students have proven to be very dedicated over the years as these lessons provide them with a service that they otherwise would not have been able to receive.
Lessons are private, on a weekly or bi weekly basis usually. Arrangements can be made to fit in occasional single lessons based on availability.

bruce gandy music - Clubhouse sessions
For the past several years, pipers across the globe have been able to take advantage of Bruce's years of piobaireachd experience by registering for several "clubhouse sessions" each fall to spring. Bruce gathers a group of students in Halifax, and then people sign in from across the world, to enjoy a session covering 2-3 piobaireachds each time. Bruce teaches the movements, the tune, and there is always at least one full piobaireachd performance on pipes, either by Bruce, Alex Gandy, or one of their students.
Students signing up remotely receive in advance a package with recordings, sheet music and notes, so everyone is fully ready to enjoy the class. You can play, sing and laugh along as students across the world learn tunes from Bruce, and there's a chat feature that allows you to ask questions and have them answered during the lessons.
Workshops and performances
bruce does several well-known and established piping schools and workshops, and is also available by request to take on other projects. Just send email c/o the website, we'll work it out.
